My Home, My Haven!

This is just a short bit about me, the hostess of this web site.  My name is Debi Hopkins, and I've been married to my wonderful husband Boyde for almost 31 years now.

We have homesteaded our property together during those 30+ years, and raised our three children here. We finished our era of home-schooling in 2005.

Our three children are all "growed up" and moved on to adult pursuits.  The two older ones have children of their own.  Our youngest son is single and a working man now!

I am a "country girl" at heart, and I enjoy trying  my hand at old fashioned country life skills like raising dairy goats  in order to reap the benefits of having healthy, raw milk available for my family.  I must say, keeping a few dairy goats is rewarding, and we've not regretted taking them on as a part of our small homestead, except for the bit of trouble they've caused us because our fencing----it wasn't up to snuff, but it's great now, and they stay put like they are supposed to----unless a grandchild "forgets" to close the gate properly!  We also raise chickens for their free range eggs and meat, as well as meat rabbits, and pork.  I would love to raise a milk cow someday too, but my husband says the goats would have to go, and I'm not sure I'm ready to part with them yet!

I am currently thoroughly enjoying being a stay at home wife and grandmother!  This winter my daughter introduced me to sewing fitted cloth diapers and making "wooly" diaper covers for her 9 month old little boy.  She and her husband are the proud parents of their 9 month old son, and they are expecting another son in May of this year (2009).  My older grandchildren were hoping for another girl, as the boys are in the lead here in our family!  So far it goes like this:  (B) Troy is 10; (B) Loren is 8; (G) Brooke is 7; (B) Tieson is 6 (these are our oldest son's children) and then (B) Tavin is 9 months and "new baby boy" is due in May.  Our daughter and her husband say they will most likely have more, so we will keep the tally open for now, and our youngest son says he wants a couple of children someday, so who knows,  maybe the girls will catch up someday in our grandchildren tally!

I also enjoy many, many other things that I have increased trouble finding the time to do, like:

Bible studies geared towards being a godly woman

Keeping my home clean and organized

Gardening with Heirloom & Open Pollinated seeds

Learning more about Herbs (both culinary and medicinal)

Natural and healthy living

Nutritious menu planning

Cooking from scratch

Whole grain/bread baking

Stocking a healthy pantry

Canning fruits and vegetables and more!

Keeping a small herd of livestock (sheep, goats, chickens, etc.)

Composting

Soap making

Candle dipping

Raising fruit trees & berries

Needle arts such as, sewing, crochet, knitting, spinning, weaving, quilting---
